Not the laugh out loud nonsense I was expecting either but an actual look into growing up in a large working class family when times are hard. It’s about being part of a big, northern, working-class family forever struggling with money, but never short on laughs or misadventures, who show that when the chips are down what really matters is sticking together. Characters from both sides of his family loom large in his life story, too, from his beloved grandfather to his Irish nana, singing bawdily in the pub while sneakily chugging wine from a box she smuggled in.
Worth my download credit. Not much to say other than it’s proper funny.

You realize he’s ‘just like you’ and you love him all the more for it. He told a few recycled lines, such as the apocryphal stupid answers told on Family Fortunes, to polite titters, but when he started telling the tale of his mugging, jasom a little embellishment, the seed began to germinate.

Jason Manford is a funny bloke. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Manford never worked well in a conventional environment, where he had a tendency just to walk out the door rather than deal with petty frustrations. Well written and narrated, although lacking some of the subtlety of his actual standup, but the biggest downside is reading it 7 years on from its authoring – the guy is now divorced and remarried, so a lot of the family sentiment feels a bit hollow.
